Ewing of Texas and Victoria Elliot of New Jersey; his grandparents Fredrick and Margaret Souza of Maine and JoAnn Ewing of Ipswich and an extended loving family. He was the grandson of the late David O. Ewing formerly of Ipswich.
His funeral service will be held 10 am Wednesday December 21, 2011 in the Ascension Memorial Church, 31 County Street, Ipswich followed by interment in the New Highland Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours are Tuesday 4 to 8 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. The cliché “pitching and defense win championships” was never more evident than this past Sunday at Doyon field where the PLAV and Club 498 squared off in a best of three series to determine the Ipswich Men’s Over 30 softball champion for 2011. With both teams having an eye on the prize it would take nearly mistake free play to crown a champion. In the end true grit, determination, and timely hitting would prove to be keys for a victory.
In game one Club 498 got off to early start putting four runs on the board in the first inning with Jay Lessard, Mike Hoffman, and Jamie Morley getting the offense going with early hits followed by the support of Richie Dodson and Scott Higgins to give the 498 an early lead. The PLAV would chip away against 498 starter Jimmy Edwards but with key defensive double plays of the duo Marc Comeau and Richie Dodson along with key outfield catches from Larry White, and Jamie Morley, and Mike Hoffman would keep the blue crew of the PLAV off the bases. 498 added an extra run in the sixth inning with a huge hit from Richie Dodson to give the 498 a three run lead. The PLAV would mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh scoring a run to cut the lead to two but a key foul ball catch by Pete Rockett and a fly out to Jamie Morley ended the game with the 498 coming away with a 5-3 victory. Jimmy Edwards took the win with solid pitching while Doug Howland took the loss for the PLAV, despite pitching well to keep his team in the game and getting key defensive plays from his outfield.
Game two saw both teams scoreless until the second inning when the PLAV stuck for the first run of the game. The 498 crew answered back in the bottom of the third tying the game at one. Later in the game both teams scored which made the score 5-3 in favor of the 498 thanks to a spectacular catch by Mike “Sweets Purple Power” Powers in the top of the sixth inning that preserved the lead. In the bottom of the sixth Larry White came up with a huge hit that scored the sixth run for a little extra comfort. The PLAV crew would not go down quietly and staged another comeback bid in the top of the seventh, getting a runner on first with two outs. A pop out to Marc Comeau ended any PLAV threat and secured the 6-3 win for 498 and marking the first time in Ipswich Men’s Over 30 history that Club 498 would have an Over 30 Softball title of its own.
Larry White got the victory in game two for 498 with his dazzling riser, while Mike Blake took the loss for the PLAV despite pitching well. After the game rookie coach Jay Lessard of the 498 called the victory a total team effort top to bottom with everyone contributing, and especially injured player Paul Rigby who was on hand to keep the guys focused and motivated.
Field Observations:
- 498 coach Jay Lessard gave high praise to fellow teammate and coach Matt Comeau who was a vital cog in helping Lessard draft this year’s team. All members of the 498 were proud to be able to present the championship trophy to Dave French and the 498 after the game and to thank the 498 for their support during the year.
- 498’S Mike “Sweets” Powers is starting a new campaign for Purple Power in his purple dyed hairdo. No word if the rumor is true he will be running for president of The United States in 2012.
- A great job of umpiring from the team of Mike Singer, Angie Perna, and Tom Dudek to insure the games ran smoothly.

Semi Finals 2011 – Sunday August 14, 2011
After twelve weeks of play, the Ipswich Men’s Over 30 Softball league began the first round of the playoffs to determine who would be going to Championship weekend Sunday August 21.
Fierce play, timely hitting, key defense, and the will to win held more merit getting to the finals than what was accomplished in the regular season. In the end the seeds were set for an epic final.
Rookie of the Year was presented to Mike Hoffman (left) of Club 498, the Brother Roxie Sportsmanship Award was presented to Mike & Son’s Jim Restuccia (right), and the Tom Sullivan Unsung Award was presented to Mike “Sweets” Powers (center) of Club 498.
Before the games began year end awards were handed out to individuals for their performance in 2011. Rookie of the Year was presented to Mike Hoffman of Club 498, the Brother Roxie Sportsmanship Award was presented to Mike & Son’s Jim Restuccia, and the Tom Sullivan Unsung Award was presented to Mike “Sweets” Powers of Club 498.
On Doyon field Mike & Sons took on Club 498. Game one was a back and forth battle of defense and offense. Mike’s opened with five runs in the first inning on their way 9-8 win. Team effort was in play for the oil drillers on offense. Mike Stasiuk got the win while Jimmy Edwards was the tough luck loser. Leading the 498 in hitting was rookie of the year winner Mike Hoffman, Jay Lessard, and Rich Dodson with three hits apiece. In game two, Club 498, with a sense of urgency, started the hitting parade early on the way to a 15-8 victory. Larry White got the win while Bill Knovack took the loss for Mikes. Leading hitters for 498 were Marc Comeau, Mike Hoffman, and Jamie Morley with three hits apiece. Jay Lessard made a spectacular catch in left center to hold off a rally by Mikes in the middle of the game to preserve the win. With the series tied at one it would come down to a game three tiebreaker to determine a finalist. Game three was a total team effort by 498 with a 16-11 win over Mikes. Jimmy Edwards took the victory for Mikes while Mike Stasiuk took the loss for Mikes. Mike Hoffman again led the 498 hitting parade. Marc Comeau and Pete Rockett also chipped in. Mike Hoffman made a key inning ending throw home to catcher Jimmy Leaver late in the game to tag out Tom Ewing and kill a Mike & Son’s rally.
On Grimes field PLAV took on Institution for Savings in a best out of two of three battle. In game one PLAV got off to an early lead on their way to a 14-6 victory. Doug Howland took the win for the PLAV while Mike Jeanotte took the loss for the bankers. Scott Garand led the PLAV with five hits, followed by Charlie Michaud with four hits, and Pete Garand chipping in with three hits. In game two IFS, like club 498 played with a sense of urgency and avoided elimination with a 11-10 nail biter. Hitting leaders for the PLAV were Scott Garand, Pete Garand, Tom Spinhurn who went 4 for 5 and Rich Motala who went 3-5 including a game tying home run in the 7th. Pete Robbins took the win for the Bankers while Mike Blake took the loss for the PLAV. Game three, to determine the other finalist, was a back and forth battle with the PLAV holding on for a 9-5 victory. Doug Howland got the win for the PLAV while the combination of Pete Robbins and Mike Jeanotte took the loss for IFS. Scott Garand led the Blue crew on offense going 4-5 and 13-15 over the three games during the day.
Club 498 will face the PLAV in the championship, best of three series, next Sunday August 21 at 9 a.m.
Field Observations:
- Congrats go out to Dave Wood who has been on the DL this season with winning the Red Sox raffle weekend.
- Mike “Sweets” Powers didn’t get the memo that he was suppose to be at the field 15 minutes earlier than normal this week for the award presentations. When Mike arrived he had no idea he had won the Tom Sullivan award. He made up for his tardiness by playing a great series in the semi finals.
- Joining the K of Shame this week were Jamie Morely, Pete Rockett, and Jimmy Gallant, who had the distinction of striking out three times. He has joined a fine company of veterans who have all done this over the years.
- The Over 30 softball gods worked their magic and made sure the rain showers held off at the field to make sure the games were played.
- Kudos to Pro Turn for their field prep and to Angie Perna for putting down the lines.
- Had video camera been available this week,, a couple of field plays may have made ESPN web gems.
Submitted by Pete Rockett, Jay Lessard, and Pete Garand.
